Announcing PLATO: Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization

A Network for Teachers Interested in Pre-College Philosophy

Are you a teacher or administrator Interested in philosophy in Pre-College Education?  Do you teach a course in philosophy or use philosohical inqury with your students?  Are you an administrator who supports philosophy in the classroom or would like to learn more?  Would you be interested in participating in a developing network of teachers across the United States who are dedicated to philosophy in the schools?  We are working on forming such a network and would welcome inquiries from interested teachers.

While we are still at the planning stage, we envision a group of teachers who can share ideas, materials, and methods for teaching philosophy to children and young people and doing philosophy with them.  Some of our ideas include:
-an electronic newsletter of ideas
-sponsoring meetings and seminars where interested teachers and administrators can meet and explore new ideas establishing connections between college faculty and elementary and secondary school teachers and administrators in their efforts to implement philosophy in their curricula
-facilitating the development of Philosophy Clubs

If you would like to learn more, please contact our coordinator, Roberta Israeloff who is working with the APA Committee on Pre-college Instruction in Philosophy to help us form this network.  She will send you a questionnaire which will provide an opportunity for you to suggest ideas and actvities. We promise to keep in touch with future plans.
